With the backing of much of the scientific and environmental community, the United Nations recently proposed protecting 30% percent of the Earth’s ocean and land by 2030 (known as “30 by 30”). Several U.S. States are currently considering such policies, including a bill currently in the California state legislature. However, “protect” can mean a wide range of possible regulations and restrictions, and it’s currently unclear the degree to which proponents of “30 by 30” would seek to ban or restrict recreational fishing in any new protected areas. This session describes the need for the sportsmen’s community to come together with a united platform to ensure our community’s priorities are represented in any “30 by 30” polices.
